Kamui-Den #13

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in 1964 within the pages of the avant-garde manga magazine Garo. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series was a landmark of the gekiga movement, which pushed manga toward more mature, politically charged, and socially conscious storytelling. Issue 13 reflects the series' dense exploration of feudal Japan, focusing on themes of class struggle, caste systems, and the harsh realities faced by the outcasts of the Edo period.

Shirato’s work is noted for its intricate, often stark illustration style and its rigorous research into historical sociology. Rather than opting for the heroic tropes common in adventure manga of the time, he emphasized the cyclical nature of oppression. The series received significant critical acclaim during its initial run, particularly among university students and intellectual circles who resonated with its anti-establishment sentiments and its uncompromising look at the brutality of power dynamics in historical Japanese society.
