Kamui-Den: Dainibu #17

Kamui-Den: Dainibu, or The Legend of Kamui Part Two, was launched by Sanpei Shirato in the late 1980s as a direct continuation of his influential gekiga masterpiece. Following the monumental success of the original series, which defined the radical, socio-political manga movement of the 1960s, Shirato returned to his signature style. This second part maintained the series' focus on the struggle of the outcasts in Edo-period Japan, utilizing the harsh reality of the shinobi lifestyle as a vehicle to critique class hierarchy, systemic oppression, and individual liberty.

The visual language of the series remains rooted in the gritty, stark aesthetic established by Shirato, who was assisted by the Akame Productions team to maintain his complex choreography and historical detail. Issue number 17 reflects the meticulous documentation of rural life and peasant uprisings that characterized the later narrative arc. While the manga industry had shifted toward more mainstream shonen tropes by the time of its release, Kamui-Den: Dainibu was received by critics and scholars as a vital, uncompromising extension of a foundational work that had shaped the medium's intellectual maturity decades prior.
