Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai #1

Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai, or Kaya-chan is Not Scary, is a horror-comedy manga series written and illustrated by Minoru Toyoda. First serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine starting in 2022, the series centers on Kaya, a young girl with supernatural abilities who navigates a kindergarten environment alongside her beleaguered teacher, Michiru. The narrative blends unsettling occult imagery with the mundane absurdity of early childhood education, creating a unique tonal balance that differentiates it from conventional horror manga.

Toyoda’s design approach emphasizes stark contrasts between the innocent, clean lines used for the children and the grotesque, often surreal depictions of the supernatural entities Kaya encounters. The series has been received as a refreshing entry in the horror genre, noted for its ability to provoke genuine unease while maintaining a humorous core. By grounding horror in the unpredictable and sometimes chaotic setting of a preschool, Toyoda explores themes of childhood resilience and the thin veil between reality and the paranormal.
