Where it came from
Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai, or Kaya-chan is Not Scary, is a horror-comedy manga series written and illustrated by Jiro Minamoto. The second volume continues the surreal, macabre adventures of the titular character, a young girl with supernatural abilities attending a kindergarten where she frequently clashes with malevolent spirits. Minamoto developed the series as a unique blend of high-tension horror visuals and comedic pacing, utilizing Kaya’s stoic, deadpan reaction to the horrific entities surrounding her to create a distinct subversion of standard genre tropes.
The series gained significant traction within Japan's seinen demographic, appealing to readers who enjoy dark humor alongside traditional yokai-inspired horror. Critics often note Minamoto’s intentional contrast between the cute, simplistic character designs and the grotesque, intricately detailed illustrations of the ghosts and ghouls Kaya encounters. Since its serialization, the work has been recognized for its rhythmic storytelling and the way it balances unsettling supernatural imagery with the mundane absurdity of school life.
