Where it came from
Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū is the definitive complete collection of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work, Kamui-Den. Originally serialized in the groundbreaking manga magazine Garo starting in 1964, the series depicts the brutal life of outcasts and ninjas during the Edo period. It was deeply rooted in the political climate of 1960s Japan, exploring themes of class struggle, historical materialism, and the survival of the marginalized against oppressive shogunate structures.
The Ketteiban edition was designed to serve as a high-quality archival release of this complex narrative. Shirato, a master of both meticulous historical research and kinetic, high-tension illustration, utilized stark, cinematic panels to convey the harsh realities of feudal Japan. Upon its release, the series was widely lauded by intellectuals and student activists for its subversive subtext and raw artistic style, solidifying Shirato’s reputation as a foundational figure in the development of sophisticated, adult-oriented manga.
