Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu #9

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu, or the Definitive Edition of the first part of The Legend of Kamui, represents a high-quality archival reprinting of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work. Originally serialized in the groundbreaking manga magazine Garo during the 1960s, the series was created as a sociopolitical critique of feudal Japan, focusing on the systemic oppression of the outcast burakumin class and the life of a runaway ninja. Shirato utilized the story to explore materialist historical perspectives, grounding his dramatic narrative in rigorous research regarding the Edo period’s caste structure.

The Ketteiban edition was produced to preserve Shirato's complex, woodblock-inspired aesthetic and dense linework for contemporary audiences. The design prioritizes clarity and durability, aiming to honor the gritty, atmospheric visuals that defined the gekiga movement. Upon its release, this definitive collection was widely praised by critics for its meticulous restoration and for providing modern readers with access to one of the most influential works in the history of manga, which continues to be studied for its profound impact on Japanese literary and political discourse.
