Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu #7

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū is a definitive collector’s edition series reissuing Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work, Kamui-den. Originally serialized in the groundbreaking manga magazine Garo during the 1960s, the series is widely regarded as a pillar of Japanese alternative manga, praised for its dense sociopolitical commentary and exploration of feudal Japanese class structures. This specific edition was produced to provide a high-quality, comprehensive archival format for long-time readers and new scholars of the medium.

The aesthetic of this collection reflects a commitment to the stark, gritty linework characteristic of Shirato’s style, emphasizing the harsh realities of the Tokugawa period. The design philosophy centers on preserving the impact of the original panels while utilizing updated print standards to enhance legibility. Upon its release, this definitive edition was received as an essential restoration project, solidified by its intent to maintain the integrity of Shirato’s influential storytelling for future generations.
