Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden #6

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden is a definitive archival collection series focused on the side stories of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga epic, Kamui-Den. This series was produced to compile the sprawling, complex narrative of the ninja Kamui, an emblematic work of 1960s Japanese counterculture that challenged traditional storytelling with its focus on class struggle, historical materialism, and the brutal reality of the Edo period.

The design of these volumes prioritizes readability and preservation, stripping back the cluttered formatting of earlier magazine serializations to present Shirato’s stark, high-contrast ink work as the artist originally intended. These editions were well-received by manga scholars and long-term fans for their scholarly attention to detail, offering a clean, comprehensive format that honors the influence the original work exerted on the evolution of seinen manga.
