Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden #4

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden is a definitive archival collection of Sanpei Shirato’s influential gekiga series, Kamui-Den. This specific volume serves as part of a high-quality reissue project designed to preserve the intricate, politically charged narrative of the original ninja epic for contemporary readers. The series is celebrated for its deep exploration of class struggle and the rigid hierarchy of Edo-period Japan, themes that established Shirato as a pivotal figure in the development of mature, thematic manga during the 1960s.

The design of this zenshū collection prioritizes fidelity to the original atmosphere, utilizing clean, high-contrast printing to highlight Shirato’s distinctively jagged, intense artistic style. As a gaiden installment, this issue focuses on peripheral stories that expand the world-building of the main saga. The collection is highly regarded by critics and scholars for its preservation of Shirato’s radical social critiques, which challenged the conventions of the medium upon their debut and continue to be studied for their historical and sociological significance.
