La Zorra y el Cuervo #181

La Zorra y el Cuervo was a prominent Cuban humor and comic magazine that first appeared in 1965. As the official publication of the Union of Cuban Journalists, it served as a primary outlet for political satire and social commentary throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. The magazine derived its title and core premise from the classic Aesop fable, using the adversarial dynamic between the fox and the crow to mirror contemporary societal critiques under the editorship of figures like Virgilio Martínez.

Issue number 181 reflects the magazine's established editorial focus on black-and-white illustrative art and pithy, often biting, caricatures. The publication was instrumental in platforming Cuban cartoonists and illustrators, fostering a distinct national style that blended European modernist influences with localized revolutionary fervor. Received as a staple of Cuban intellectual life, these issues remain significant for documenting the evolving cultural landscape and the specific illustrative aesthetics promoted by the state-sanctioned humor industry during the 1970s and 80s.
