Lady Oscar - Die Rose von Versailles #3

The Rose of Versailles, known in Japan as Versaiyu no Bara, was authored and illustrated by Riyoko Ikeda and debuted in 1972. It was inspired by Stefan Zweig's biography of Marie Antoinette, which sparked Ikeda's interest in the French Revolution. The series was designed to blend historical drama with the conventions of shōjo manga, focusing on the life of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to serve in the Royal Guard.

The series was published in Margaret magazine and became a landmark work for its exploration of gender identity and political upheaval. Its reception was profound, influencing the subsequent direction of the shōjo genre and eventually leading to a highly influential animated adaptation. The third issue in the collected volumes or serialized compilations carries the visual hallmarks of Ikeda's evocative, rococo-influenced artistic style, which emphasizes emotional intensity through detailed floral motifs and dramatic character expressions.
