Lady Oscar - Die Rose von Versailles #4

The Rose of Versailles, known as Lady Oscar, was created by Riyoko Ikeda and serialized in the manga magazine Margaret starting in 1972. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the series follows the life of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to serve as the commander of the Royal Guard at Versailles. The narrative is celebrated for its blend of historical drama and intricate character study, marking a significant evolution in shōjo manga by exploring complex themes of gender identity and political upheaval.

The design of the series reflects Ikeda's meticulous research into the late 18th-century French court, combined with the dramatic, emotive aesthetic prevalent in 1970s manga. Issue 4 is a component of the original serialization run that helped cement the series' massive popularity in Japan. Upon its release, the work was widely praised for its lush visual storytelling and compelling protagonist, eventually inspiring a long-running anime adaptation and a lasting cultural legacy that continues to influence historical fiction in the manga medium.
