Lady Oscar - Die Rose von Versailles #5

Lady Oscar, or The Rose of Versailles, was originally serialized by Riyoko Ikeda in the manga magazine Margaret starting in 1972. The story is set in the years leading up to the French Revolution and centers on Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to serve in the Royal Guard. Issue number 5 of the German-language publication represents the later localized release of this seminal shojo manga, which was instrumental in bringing complex historical fiction to the manga medium by blending political upheaval with poignant character drama.

Riyoko Ikeda’s design philosophy for the series was heavily influenced by Western historical aesthetics and the dramatic pacing of European literature. She aimed to subvert gender roles through Oscar's dual identity, creating a narrative that resonated deeply with readers of the 1970s and beyond. The series received widespread critical acclaim for its artistic detail and emotional depth, eventually becoming a cultural touchstone that inspired countless adaptations, including the iconic anime series that solidified its status as a foundational work of historical shojo.
