Where it came from
Linda och Valentins äventyr #2, originally titled 'La Cité des eaux mouvantes' (The City of Moving Waters), was created by French writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. First appearing in the pages of the French magazine Pilote in 1968, the story was later compiled into a standalone volume. This work represents a landmark in European science fiction, establishing the foundational dynamic between the space-traveling agents Valerian and Laureline within a complex, visually inventive universe that prioritized humanist themes over traditional hero tropes.
The series became a cornerstone of the Franco-Belgian comics scene, and this second installment is noted for its imaginative depiction of a post-apocalyptic, flooded New York City. Mézières’ design sensibilities combined detailed architectural drafting with a distinct, organic fluidity, marking a stylistic shift from the rigid aesthetics of his contemporaries. Upon its release, the series was hailed for its narrative sophistication and progressive characterization, exerting a significant influence on later science fiction visual media, including films and literature.
