Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san #27

Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san, known in English as Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House, is a celebrated manga series written and illustrated by Aiko Koyama. It began serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2016. The story centers on Kiyo, a young girl who moves to the Gion district of Kyoto and becomes the live-in cook for a house of maiko, or apprentice geisha. Koyama was inspired to create the series after researching the daily lives and traditions of the maiko community, aiming to highlight the warmth of communal living and the significance of traditional Japanese culinary culture.

The 27th issue of the series continues the narrative exploration of the daily bonds within the maiko household. Koyama’s artistic style is widely praised for its gentle aesthetic and its ability to render food in a way that feels both comforting and central to the plot. As the series progressed, it garnered significant critical acclaim, including the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shonen category, solidifying its place as a thoughtful, slice-of-life look at a historically rich and often private corner of Japanese society.
