Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san #29

Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san, known in English as Kiyo in Kyoto, is a long-running manga series authored and illustrated by Aiko Koyama. First serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2016, the story focuses on the daily life of Kiyo, a young woman who moves to Kyoto and becomes a cook for a house of maiko. Issue 29 is part of the ongoing serialization, capturing Koyama's signature gentle, atmospheric style that emphasizes the warmth of communal meals and the intricate traditions of the Gion district.

Aiko Koyama designed the work to highlight the often overlooked domestic labor that supports the maiko lifestyle. Her artistic approach is characterized by detailed culinary illustrations and soft character designs, which contrast with the more high-stakes tropes common in shonen manga. The series has been widely praised for its empathetic tone and cultural research, eventually leading to both an anime adaptation and a live-action series, cementing its place as a celebrated modern slice-of-life title.
