Where it came from
The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves was a staple of the Charlton Comics horror line, debuting in 1967 during a period when the publisher focused heavily on anthology-style mystery and supernatural tales. Issue #26, published in 1971, fits squarely within the classic era of the series, which was curated and hosted by the titular Dr. Graves, a character designed to guide readers through various spooky, self-contained narratives in the tradition of EC Comics' famous hosts.
The interior art for this period of the series featured a rotation of Charlton’s reliable house contributors, often characterized by a gritty, lower-budget aesthetic that gave the books a distinctively underground feel. While the series was never a mainstream blockbuster compared to titles from DC or Marvel, it gained a devoted following among genre enthusiasts for its campy tone and consistent output of macabre, irony-laden morality plays.
