Where it came from
Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #42 was published in 1973 by Charlton Comics, a company renowned for its prolific and budget-conscious approach to the horror and suspense genre during the Silver and Bronze Ages of comics. The series centered on the titular Dr. Graves, a spectral host who introduced readers to self-contained tales of the macabre, following a successful format established by earlier horror anthologies of the era.
The creative direction of the title relied on the work of veteran artists and writers like Joe Gill, who maintained a consistent tone of eerie, atmospheric storytelling. These issues were designed to satisfy the niche demand for supernatural mystery comics that remained popular among adolescent readers, and while the series functioned as a pulp-style anthology, it is recognized today for the stylized cover art and gritty illustrative techniques typical of Charlton's distinct mid-century house style.
