Where it came from
The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves debuted in 1967, emerging from Charlton Comics during a period when the publisher was leaning heavily into supernatural horror and suspense anthologies. The series was designed to feature the titular Dr. Graves, a host character inspired by the success of horror hosts in the EC Comics tradition, who would introduce various stories of the macabre to the reader.
The title was primarily edited and written by Joe Gill, with interior art in the first issue contributed by artists such as Pat Boyette, whose distinct, moody style helped establish the atmospheric tone the series would maintain throughout its run. It was received as a standard but quintessential example of the Silver Age horror revival, praised by collectors for its kitschy, earnest approach to the supernatural genre.
