Martian Manhunter #14

Martian Manhunter #14, published by DC Comics in early 2000, stands as a notable entry in the character's second self-titled ongoing series. Written by John Ostrander with interior art primarily by Tom Mandrake, this issue continues the series' exploration of J'onn J'onzz's psychological depth and his complex relationship with his Martian heritage. During this era, Ostrander and Mandrake sought to differentiate the character from his Justice League persona by grounding him in the gritty urban landscape of Middleton, Colorado, framing his struggle as a noir-infused meditation on displacement and identity.

The creative team intentionally leaned into the darker, investigative tone established throughout the series. Mandrake’s atmospheric, often shadowed, illustrative style was crafted to emphasize the isolation felt by a telepathic extraterrestrial living among humans. Upon release, the series was well-regarded by critics for its sophisticated character work, even as it navigated the challenges of sustaining a solo title for a character more traditionally associated with ensemble teams.
