Where it came from
Martian Manhunter #2 was published in 1998 as part of a limited series written by John Ostrander with interior art by Tom Mandrake. This series was conceived to revitalize J'onn J'onzz, moving away from his historical role as a supporting member of the Justice League to explore his complex, tragic psyche as the sole survivor of a martian civilization, establishing a darker and more introspective tone for the character.
The visual direction led by Mandrake focused on a gothic, moody aesthetic that mirrored the character's alienation and heavy burden of memory. The series received significant critical acclaim for its sophisticated narrative, which effectively transformed J'onn from a traditional superhero into a more layered, mythological figure, solidifying this era of his publication history as a definitive run for long-time readers.
