Martian Manhunter #16

Martian Manhunter #16, published in April 2000, stands as a notable entry in the character's second self-titled series for DC Comics. Written by John Ostrander with art by penciler Tom Mandrake and inker Dan Green, this issue continues the series' exploration of J'onn J'onzz's complex psychology and his role as a bridge between humanity and his lost Martian heritage. The creative team was widely praised for grounding the extraterrestrial protagonist in a gritty, emotionally resonant narrative that elevated his status from a Justice League ensemble member to a compelling solo lead.

The visual identity of this series was defined by Tom Mandrake's distinctive, atmospheric style, which utilized heavy shadows and emotive character work to emphasize the internal isolation experienced by the Manhunter. By the time of the sixteenth issue, the series had established itself as a cornerstone of the 'DC Universe' imprint, balancing superhero action with noir-inspired detective elements. This era of the character remains a favorite among long-time fans for its commitment to thematic depth and character-driven storytelling, cementing the title as a high point in Martian Manhunter's publication history.
