Martian Manhunter #17

Martian Manhunter #17 was published in 2000 as part of the character's second ongoing solo series. This era of the title, written primarily by John Ostrander with art by Tom Mandrake, was noted for its introspective and psychological approach to J'onn J'onzz. The series aimed to ground the alien detective within the complexities of human society, often emphasizing his role as a philosopher and outsider observing the nuances of the human condition.

The creative team of Ostrander and Mandrake intentionally leaned into a moody, atmospheric aesthetic that contrasted with the more traditional superhero action of the period. By exploring J'onn's telepathic connection to the world and his internal struggles with his lost heritage, the title cultivated a cult following among fans who appreciated character-driven narratives. This specific issue continues the series' themes of identity and moral ambiguity, serving as a quintessential example of the darker, narrative-heavy tone Mandrake established for the character during this run.
