Mórén Zhēntàn Nǎoniè Nièluó #17

Mórén Zhēntàn Nǎoniè Nièluó, known internationally as Neuro: Supernatural Detective, originated as a manga series written and illustrated by Yusei Matsui. Serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump starting in 2005, the series blends supernatural elements with detective procedural tropes. Issue 17 of the collected volume run represents a mid-series development, reflecting Matsui’s evolving artistic style as he moved away from traditional shōnen templates toward the more complex, darkly comedic storytelling that would later define his work in Assassination Classroom.

The character design of the demon detective Neuro Nogami reflects the series' focus on visual grotesquerie and psychological tension. Matsui aimed to subvert the archetype of the brilliant, altruistic detective by making his protagonist a demonic entity who feeds on mysteries. The design choices, characterized by sharp, angular lines and disturbing shifts in facial expression, were received as a refreshing, albeit niche, departure from the mainstream aesthetic of the era, garnering a dedicated cult following that appreciated its intellectual pacing and subversive tone.
