Where it came from
Nellie the Nurse #12 was published by Marvel Comics in the late 1940s, during a period when the publisher was rapidly diversifying its output beyond the superhero genre that had defined its early years. As post-war society shifted, Marvel leaned into humor and 'funny girl' comics to capture a broader audience, focusing on the comedic misadventures of healthcare workers in a lighthearted, episodic format.
The character of Nellie was part of a trend of career-oriented humor comics, designed to provide breezy, accessible entertainment for young readers. The illustration and narrative style relied on the slapstick tropes common to the era, prioritizing visual gags and mild situational comedy over complex arcs, reflecting the publisher's strategy to fill newsstands with inexpensive, mass-market reading material.
