NHK ni Yōkoso! #1

Welcome to the N.H.K., or NHK ni Yōkoso!, began as a serialized novel written by Tatsuhiko Takimoto and illustrated by Yoshitoshi ABe, first published in 2002. It serves as a dark, satirical exploration of the hikikomori phenomenon in Japan, centering on a young man's struggle with social withdrawal and paranoia. The narrative grew from Takimoto's personal experiences, offering a raw and often uncomfortable look at NEET culture during the early 2000s.

The character designs by Yoshitoshi ABe provided the definitive visual identity for the franchise, balancing the unsettling nature of the protagonist’s delusions with a grounded, urban aesthetic. Upon its release, the work was noted for its cynical tone and its departure from typical light novel tropes, leading to widespread critical attention and a subsequent manga adaptation by Kenji Oiwa that solidified its cult following.
