Where it came from
Not Brand Echh #1 was published by Marvel Comics in 1967 as a direct response to the immense success of Mad magazine. During the mid-sixties, Marvel was undergoing a rapid expansion in popularity, and publisher Stan Lee decided to lean into the self-deprecating humor already present in his editorial voice by creating a parody comic that would poke fun at Marvel's own superhero lineup as well as competitors like DC.
The issue featured a blend of comedic talent, including contributions from Marvel staples like Marie Severin, Jack Kirby, and Stan Lee himself. The series was designed to be loose and irreverent, utilizing a 'house style' that discarded the serious tone of the Silver Age in favor of caricature and satire. It was well-received by fans at the time for its willingness to lampoon the company's own iconic characters, such as the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, cementing its place as a cult classic in Marvel's publishing history.
