Not Brand Echh #2

Not Brand Echh #2 was published by Marvel Comics in 1967 as part of the publisher's foray into satirical parody comics. Born from the editorial team's desire to lampoon their own successful roster of superhero titles, the series sought to replicate the irreverent, subversive humor popularized by Mad Magazine. By allowing their own creators to poke fun at the house style and the established narratives of characters like the Fantastic Four and the Hulk, Marvel sought to solidify its cultural footprint during the peak of the mid-sixties satirical boom.

The design and illustrative tone of the issue were spearheaded by editor Stan Lee and a rotation of artistic talent including Marie Severin and Tom Sutton. The creative team leaned heavily into caricatured art styles and slapstick scripts that deconstructed the seriousness of the Marvel Universe. The series was met with genuine warmth from readers who appreciated the company's ability to not take itself too seriously, effectively positioning Not Brand Echh as a humorous counterpoint to the dramatic continuity of the primary Marvel line.
