Where it came from
Our Fighting Forces #144, published in 1973 by DC Comics, serves as a pivotal installment in the long-running war anthology series. It is most notably recognized as the debut of Jack Kirby’s 'The Losers' in this specific title, following his transition from Marvel to DC. The series moved away from traditional combat storytelling to focus on the grit and moral complexities faced by a recurring band of soldiers, reflecting a shift in how war narratives were approached in comics during the post-Vietnam era.
Jack Kirby both wrote and illustrated this issue, applying his signature dynamic style and cinematic panel layouts to the war genre. His vision for the team was one of resilience and camaraderie under extreme duress. While the series had a long history of rotating creative teams, Kirby’s run is celebrated for its kinetic energy and character-driven focus, securing its place as a significant entry in the 1970s Bronze Age of comics.
