Our Fighting Forces #147

Our Fighting Forces #147, released by DC Comics in 1974, serves as a pivotal moment in the series as it marks the debut of Jack Kirby’s creative control over the title. Following his move from Marvel, Kirby took on the roles of writer, penciler, and editor, shifting the book's focus from traditional war stories to his own creation, The Losers. This transition was significant as it infused the gritty, realistic genre of war comics with Kirby's characteristic high-concept energy and dynamic visual storytelling.

The design and narrative direction were driven by Kirby’s desire to explore the camaraderie and psychological resilience of soldiers behind enemy lines. His aesthetic choices for this era are noted for their blocky, kinetic action sequences and a heavy, textured style that departed from the more polished war comic art of the time. While the series had long been a staple of DC's 'war' line, Kirby's run is critically regarded today as a distinct artistic endeavor that transformed the title into a showcase for his unique creative vision.
