Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in 1975, Our Fighting Forces #157 is a significant entry in the company's long-running war anthology series. This issue is best known for marking the debut of Jack Kirby’s run as writer and artist on the 'The Losers' feature, where he took over the title to inject his signature bombastic storytelling and kinetic visual style into the gritty, desperate lives of soldiers trapped behind enemy lines.
Kirby's approach to the series diverged from the traditional, straightforward war comics of the era by focusing on the psychological toll and chaotic intensity of combat. His character designs for Gunner, Sarge, Pooch, and Captain Storm were imbued with a sense of weariness and resilience that resonated with readers. The work was received as a bold reinvention, blending Kirby’s hallmark cosmic-adjacent energy with the grounded, grim requirements of a Second World War narrative.
