Where it came from
Our Fighting Forces #159, published by DC Comics in 1975, represents a significant turning point in the series as it marked the debut of Jack Kirby’s run on the title. Kirby, already a legendary figure in the comic book industry, took over both writing and art duties to revitalize the long-running war anthology. His arrival brought a stylistic shift, infusing the traditional military narrative with his signature kinetic energy, explosive panel layouts, and intense, dramatic characterizations.
The issue is particularly noted for establishing the 'Losers' as the central focus of the series. Kirby reimagined the team as a group of seasoned veterans trapped in the chaos of World War II, moving away from standard combat tropes to emphasize the personal stakes and internal dynamics of the soldiers. While the transition from the previous tone was stark, the run is now widely regarded by comic historians and fans as a high-water mark of 1970s war comics for its bold, unconventional approach to the genre.
