Where it came from
Outre-Tombe was a French horror and fantasy comic anthology series published in the late 1960s, reflecting the era's fascination with pulp macabre and dark surrealism. These small-format, black-and-white publications were designed for rapid consumption at newsstands, drawing heavily on the tradition of the 'petit format' comics that defined French popular reading during the post-war period.
The aesthetic of the series leaned into the visceral, gritty illustration styles prevalent in continental horror comics of the time. Like many anthologies of its genre, the issues relied on a revolving door of illustrators and writers who sought to evoke shock and tension through dramatic ink work and unsettling themes, catering to an audience that favored the transgressive nature of the horror underground.
