Where it came from
Outre-Tombe #18 belongs to a French anthology series dedicated to the exploration of the macabre, dark fantasy, and horror genres. Launched during a period when independent horror comics and genre-specific zines saw a modest resurgence in Europe, the publication served as a curated platform for writers and illustrators interested in pushing the boundaries of traditional gothic tropes. Its design philosophy focused on high-contrast visual storytelling, often employing stark black-and-white compositions that evoke the classic aesthetics of 1970s supernatural magazines.
The contributors to the series generally consisted of an rotating roster of underground artists and novelists whose work prioritized atmosphere and narrative unease over mainstream commercial appeal. Issue #18, like its predecessors, reflects the editorial mandate to synthesize international horror influences with a distinctively French sensibility. While the series remains a niche interest within the broader landscape of graphic literature, it is recognized by collectors for its commitment to maintaining a consistent, haunting visual identity that eschews the gloss of larger, mass-market publishing houses.
