Outsiders #1

Outsiders #1, released in 1983, marked the debut of a superhero team created by writer Mike W. Barr and artist Jim Aparo. The series emerged during a period of experimentation at DC Comics, where the team was conceptualized as a group of outsiders who operated outside the traditional jurisdiction and moral strictures of the Justice League. This focus on street-level operations and unconventional methods provided a gritty alternative to the publisher's more traditional team-up books of the era.

Jim Aparo's design work for the issue emphasized a diverse aesthetic that reflected the disparate origins of the characters, including Batman’s departure from his usual partners. The title was received as a notable departure in tone, with fans responding well to the darker, more tactical nature of the team's missions. The series eventually became a cornerstone of DC’s mid-eighties output, grounding the characters in a world where political tension and personal conflict were as significant as physical combat.
