Perry Mason Mystery Magazine #1

Perry Mason Mystery Magazine #1 was published in 1956 by Donald A. Wollheim under the Pageant Magazine imprint. It emerged during the mid-century peak of the pulp and digest-sized magazine era, intended to capitalize on the immense popularity of Erle Stanley Gardner's courtroom detective series. Gardner, who was a prolific contributor to pulp magazines early in his career, lent his character’s name to this publication to serve as a showcase for various mystery stories and legal thrillers, rather than featuring exclusively Mason-centric tales.

The publication leaned heavily into the hard-boiled and deductive mystery aesthetics of the 1950s, featuring stark, moody cover art typical of the era's digest magazines. While the magazine aimed to provide a recurring platform for crime fiction writers in the vein of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, it struggled to maintain a consistent audience and had a relatively brief shelf life. Today, it is regarded by collectors as a distinct archival piece of the Gardner literary empire and a representative example of the short-lived digest mystery craze.
