Peter Cannon Thunderbolt #3

Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #3 was published by Charlton Comics in 1966 as part of a short-lived superhero revival. Created by writer and artist Pete Morisi, the character was conceived as a master of martial arts and ancient knowledge, fitting into the company's broader efforts to compete with the rising popularity of costumed crime-fighters in the mid-1960s. The series leaned into the trend of philosophical or mystical superheroes, distinguishing itself from its contemporaries with Morisi’s distinct, grounded illustration style.

The character and the series eventually became a notable piece of comic book history due to its influence on Alan Moore’s seminal graphic novel, Watchmen. The protagonist served as a direct inspiration for the character Ozymandias, as the rights to the Charlton characters were acquired by DC Comics after the company shuttered its superhero line. This retrospective connection has elevated the status of the original issues among collectors who value the lineage of influential comic book archetypes.
