Where it came from
Pondroid! Hama-san #1 was published as the inaugural entry in a niche series exploring the whimsical intersection of robotic technology and rural Japanese life. The series was conceived during a period of rising interest in domestic-tech satire, positioning the protagonist, Hama-san, as a malfunctioning android struggling to adapt to the slow, traditional pace of a fictional riverside village.
The character design and illustrations were crafted to evoke a stark contrast between sleek, futuristic aesthetics and rustic, hand-drawn environments. Critics of the time noted that the series functioned as a gentle critique of rapid modernization, with the art style intentionally oscillating between rigid, mechanical lines and soft, organic brushwork to underscore the emotional disconnect between the protagonist and its environment.
