Where it came from
Released in 1998 by VIZ Media, The Electric Tale of Pikachu is a four-volume manga series written and illustrated by Toshihiro Ono. This adaptation was commissioned to capitalize on the explosive international popularity of the Pokémon franchise during its early years, adapting the narrative of the original anime series with a distinct, slightly edgier artistic flair that deviated from the standard character designs found in the television episodes.
Issue number two continues the journey of Ash Ketchum, following his initial encounters with wild Pokémon and his evolving relationship with his partner, Pikachu. Toshihiro Ono’s work on the series is noted for its expressive character art and unique interpretations of the Pokémon world, which gave the early manga a cult following among fans who appreciated its departure from the tone of the animated series. It remains a significant relic from the late nineties Pokémon boom.
