Powerless #2

Powerless #2 was released in 2004 as part of a six-issue limited series published by Marvel Comics under their MAX imprint. Created by writer Matt Cherniss and Peter Johnson, with interior art by Michael Gaydos, the series explored a world where superheroes were not born with abilities, but were instead ordinary people dealing with the consequences of living in a universe where extraordinary power exists elsewhere. The narrative sought to ground high-concept comic tropes in a gritty, realistic framework, mirroring the tone of grounded prestige television of the era.

The aesthetic of the series, shaped significantly by Michael Gaydos’s moody and atmospheric illustrative style, was intended to evoke a noir-inspired, psychological realism. By stripping away the spectacle typical of mainstream Marvel titles, the creative team aimed to challenge reader perceptions of identity and power. While the series received critical attention for its unique premise and darker thematic undertones, it remains a distinct, experimental entry within the Marvel library that prioritized character-driven drama over traditional superhero action.
