Where it came from
Project Riese, an independent comic series, was conceived as a narrative exploration of the historical mysteries surrounding the Nazi German construction project of the same name in the Owl Mountains. The series leverages the architectural secrecy and folklore of the underground tunnel complex to weave a speculative fiction story, blending historical conspiracy with contemporary investigative themes. The project emerged from a small-press tradition focused on historical revisionism and regional Polish lore.
The art and design of the second issue maintain the gritty, high-contrast aesthetic established in the series premiere, prioritizing atmospheric tension over conventional superhero iconography. Illustrators for the series sought to evoke a sense of claustrophobia, mirroring the reported conditions of the historical Riese project through stark panels and meticulous environmental details. The series has found a niche audience among enthusiasts of historical mysteries and underground independent comics, receiving moderate attention for its commitment to thematic gravity.
