Where it came from
Protectors #9 was published by Malibu Comics in 1993 as part of the Protectors series, a cornerstone title of the company’s short-lived but ambitious Genesis line. The series was designed to breathe new life into the Golden and Silver Age characters Malibu had acquired through its purchase of Centaur Publications, reimagining these obscure vintage heroes with modern, gritty sensibilities common to the 1990s comic book aesthetic.
The creative direction for the series focused on deconstructing the traditional superhero archetype, with Rags Morales serving as a primary artistic force during the title's run. While the series sought to capitalize on the industry's speculation boom, it is now remembered primarily as a bold experiment in comic book continuity, reflecting the era's fascination with dark, interconnected universe-building.
