Where it came from
Puella Magi Madoka Magica #1 is the inaugural volume of the manga adaptation of the 2011 original anime series produced by Shaft and Aniplex. The manga, illustrated by Hanokage and serialized in Manga Time Kirara Magica, was released to coincide with the rapid cultural phenomenon surrounding the television broadcast. It serves as a visual retelling of the dark fantasy story, which was conceived by Gen Urobuchi to subvert the established magical girl genre by introducing existential stakes and psychological horror.
The design of this volume reflects the distinct aesthetic sensibilities of the series, balancing 'cute' character archetypes against a grim, surreal narrative backdrop. Hanokage’s art style closely adheres to the character designs originated by Ume Aoki, focusing on rounded, expressive features that contrast sharply with the series' somber themes. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by fans looking for a print accompaniment to the anime, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of modern cult-classic manga collections.
