Where it came from
Public Domain #2 is part of an ongoing comic book series written and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky, first launched in 2022 through his Substack newsletter. The series explores the precarious lives of comic book creators and their families as they navigate the legal and moral complexities of intellectual property rights, specifically focusing on the struggle to reclaim characters from corporate ownership.
Zdarsky adopts a grounded, conversational aesthetic for the series, utilizing a stripped-back illustrative style that mirrors the introspective and often melancholy tone of the narrative. The project emerged from a broader industry discourse regarding creator rights and the often-exploitative history of legacy publishing, and it has been critically received as a poignant, meta-commentary on the medium itself.
