Psylocke: Ninja #1

Released in 2000 as part of a three-issue limited series, Psylocke: Ninja was published by Marvel Comics during a period when the X-Men franchise was aggressively expanding its solo character spotlights. This miniseries sought to provide a definitive exploration of Betsy Braddock’s dual nature as a British aristocrat and a trained Japanese assassin, contextualizing her complex origin within the broader tapestry of the Marvel Universe at the turn of the millennium.

The series was written by Fabian Nicieza, a veteran of X-Men lore, with artwork by Javier Saltares. The creative team leaned heavily into the stylistic trends of 1990s and early 2000s comic illustration, favoring high-contrast, action-oriented aesthetics to emphasize Psylocke's combat prowess and ninja background. Upon release, the issue was received as a standard character-focused spin-off, primarily serving long-time fans who were interested in reconciling the character's shifting history after the body-swap narrative that originally transformed her persona.
