Where it came from
Released in the early 2010s, Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica ~The Different Story~ serves as a three-volume spin-off manga series that expands upon the narrative of the original anime. This specific volume, the second in the trilogy, was produced to deepen the backstory of characters Mami Tomoe and Kyoko Sakura, providing a more granular look at their relationship and shared history before the events depicted in the main series.
The series was illustrated by Hanokage, an artist known for their long-standing work on the Madoka Magica manga adaptations. The design aesthetic intentionally mirrors the established visual style of the franchise, focusing on the contrast between the seemingly lighthearted magical girl tropes and the darker, psychological toll inherent in the series. It was received by fans as a critical piece of supplementary material that reconciles character motivations often left ambiguous in the primary television broadcast.
