Where it came from
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Different Story, published by Manga Time Kirara Forward between 2012 and 2013, serves as a spin-off to the original anime series. The third volume concludes this trilogy, which was written by Masaki Hiramatsu under the supervision of Magica Quartet, the creative team behind the main franchise. This work was developed to provide a deeper exploration of the relationship between Mami Tomoe and Kyoko Sakura, framing their history within an alternate timeline that contrasts with the emotional stakes of the television series.
The illustrations for this series were created by Hanokage, who was previously responsible for the official manga adaptation of the anime. The design objective was to capture the darker, psychological undertones of the magical girl genre while maintaining the distinct aesthetic established by the original studio production. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by fans of the series for its character development and the clarity it brought to the complex, tragic motivations of its primary protagonists.
