Where it came from
Qīlóngzhū, widely known internationally as Dragon Ball, was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump starting in 1984. Issue #21 represents a segment of the early adventures of Son Goku as he journeys to collect the seven dragon balls. Created by Akira Toriyama, the series was heavily inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which Toriyama adapted into a high-energy martial arts and fantasy setting that prioritized character design and kinetic paneling.
The aesthetic of this era reflects Toriyama's transition from gag manga toward a more action-oriented narrative style. His character designs, characterized by bold lines and expressive silhouettes, became a hallmark of the magazine's identity during the mid-eighties. Upon its release, the series was received with immense enthusiasm by Japanese readers, quickly becoming a cornerstone of shōnen manga and establishing a visual language that influenced generations of artists globally.
