Where it came from
Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, began its serialization in the Japanese anthology Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984. Created by Akira Toriyama, the series was inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which Toriyama blended with his own affinity for martial arts cinema and science fiction tropes. Issue number 2 continues the initial chapters of the narrative, introducing readers to the foundational dynamic between the young adventurer Son Goku and the precocious Bulma as they set out on their quest for the titular Dragon Balls.
Toriyama’s artistic approach for these early chapters favored a blend of humorous, cartoonish character designs with inventive, action-oriented panel layouts. The series was designed to appeal to a broad demographic, emphasizing curiosity and discovery. Upon its release, the early chapters were well received by readers, quickly establishing the series as a staple of the magazine and setting the stage for the dramatic evolution in tone and scope that would define the franchise in the decades to follow.
