Qīlóngzhū #18

Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump starting in 1984, with issue number 18 appearing as part of the initial run of the original manga volumes. Written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama, the series was heavily influenced by the Chinese classic Journey to the West and Hong Kong martial arts cinema. This specific period of the series established the foundation for the adventure-focused narrative that would later define the global shonen genre.

Toriyama’s art style in these early chapters was characterized by a distinct fusion of rounded, whimsical character designs and meticulous mechanical detailing, reflecting his background as a graphic designer. Upon its release, the series was received as a refreshing departure from the darker, more serious manga of the era. The critical and commercial reception during this stage solidified Toriyama's position in the industry and set the stage for the massive expansion of the franchise’s popularity in subsequent years.
